SILENCE
"Before the celebration itself, it is commendable
that silence be observed in the church, in the sacristy, in the vesting room
and in adjacent areas, so that all may dispose themselves to carry out the
sacred action in a devout and fitting manner."
A period of silence also needs to be observed during the Penitential Rite, before the Collect, after the readings from Sacred Scripture, the homily
and after Communion has been distributed.
GESTURES and BODILY POSTURES
A common bodily posture, to be observed by all taking
part, is a sign of the unity of the members of the Christian community gathered
together for the Sacred Liturgy, for it expresses the intention and spiritual
attitude of the participants and also fosters them. Attention must always be
paid to what serves the
common spiritual
attitude of the People of God, rather than private inclination or arbitrary
choice.
Therefore in light of this principle:
- We
will now stand at the invitation, "Pray my
brothers and
sisters " before the Prayer over the
Offerings (gifts).
- During
the Eucharistic Prayer, we will only
kneel once, namely; during the words
of
consecration ( following the epiclesis). The deacon
should also kneel
during this period.
We will stand at all other times during the Eucharistic
Prayer.
During the distribution of Communion,
the assembly remains standing until all have received the Blessed Sacrament.
After Communion has been distributed to all the assembly "as circumstances
allow, they (members of the assembly) may sit or kneel while the period of
sacred silence after Communion is observed."
A profound bow should be made toward
the altar when passing in front of or behind it and a genuflection before the
tabernacle. When tabernacle is located in the centre of the sanctuary the
priest, deacon and ministers genuflect only at the beginning
and the end of Mass.
DISTRIBUTING AND
RECEIVING OF HOLY COMMUNION
Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion receive
Communion after the presider, (and deacon) but before they help with the
distribution of Communion to the assembly. The are also to receive the ciborium
or chalice from the priest/deacon, not take it from the altar themselves.
Communion is to be received standing, preferably, in the
hand because of hygienic reasons. It can also be received on the tongue.
Everyone is asked to stop an make a simple bow of the
head before receiving Holy Communion and to consume it immediately.
